MMI - Local Jobs (while in school)
This was one place where lots of the students complained. MMI does advertise that
"they will help you find a job while in school". But it seems as though a lot of
the students show up, thinking that MMI has a direct line to employers who hire
only MMI students, and all they have to do is show up for a job. Not true!
People, while the employement situation was not as bad as a few years ago, it's
still very competitive! There aren't that many jobs available, period! Basically,
what MMI does is provide a weekly job listing, of jobs they are told are available.
But MMI students are competing with the regular public for these same jobs. The
few times I looked at the sheet, I saw things like:
7-11 hiring for 8-hour shift (what, on top of being in school 5 hours?)
or maybe UPS hiring for 12am-6am shift (uhmmmm,
no thanks).
While the list would be 5-6 pages long, there was nothing I ever saw on there except
for clerk type jobs, etc.
MMI does have "job fairs" every other month or so, but these are usually from the
same people who are on the job list (UPS wanting night workers, for instance).
Now, if you already have some mechanical experience, I know lots of guys getting
jobs in auto parts stores, quickie oil-change stores, and stuff like that. But the
important thing to realize is that MMI will not be waving a magic wand and you'll
be working in a dealership, or some great job. Most people I know had jobs delivering
pizzas, or some other such thing.
Basically, you're gonna have to so SOMETHING for a year, to pay the bills while
you're going to school. And you may have to pound the pavement looking for it. But
everybody I know who looked, was able to find some kind of job.
